For safe and secure life, people have growing expectations that automobiles will become friendlier to the environment and emit less CO2 in order to help build a low-carbon society. Targeting a "sustainable mobility society", JARI is involved in wide-ranging research projects on the reduction of automotive CO2, noise and hazardous substances and on the conservation of energy through fuel economy improvement.
Regarding the emission of hazardous substances, JARI has enough facilities, equipment and expertise for the examination of their generation mechanisms inside the engine, research into emissions reduction and after-treatment technologies, formulation of measurement and test methods, investigation of the diffusion and chemical reactions of substances emitted into the atmosphere, and evaluation of their impacts on human health. Lately JARI has taken up CO2 and noise reduction studies incorporating the traffic simulation and ITS technologies.
In the areas of exhaust emissions, fuel economy and noise, JARI takes part in the revision of Japanese test methods, harmonization of regulations, and establishment of various test methods at the UN forum. The JARI expert teams are continuing to assist Asian emerging countries in their efforts for energy conservation and environmental protection.
Electric vehicles such as hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid electric and battery electric vehicles can contribute to the reduction of automotive CO2 emissions. Additionally, automakers are developing hydrogen-based fuel cell vehicles to lessen dependence on petroleum fuels. The first commercial fuel cell vehicles are scheduled to make debut in 2015. JARI is engaged in various research projects for the standardization of electric vehicles, batteries and fuel cells.

Main test items
JARI has a variety of chassis dynamometer systems of different sizes to test a whole range of vehicles from mopeds and motorcycles to 25-ton heavy duty trucks as well as gasoline, diesel and CNG engines. Our noise measuring equipment can measure vehicle prototypes to in-use vehicles along our test courses capable of providing diverse running conditions. These systems and equipment enable JARI to test the following items:
- Exhaust emissions including hazardous trace substances
- Fuel economy
- Evaporative gas from gasoline vehicle
- Vehicle/running noise
- Onboard component systems such as emissions after-treatment devices
- Automotive fuel properties
- Running tests for traffic survey and vehicle assessment
Over the recent years JARI's testing activity has expanded into the non-automotive fields including construction machinery and industrial engines, and into the test areas relating to automotive parts such as the dust generated through the abrasion of tires and brakes.
In April 2012 JARI was ISO/IEC17025-certified as a testing institute with proven management and technical capabilities for emissions measurement. JARI offers testing services to verify compliance to the Japanese Safety Regulations and the regulations of other major motorized countries as well as the UN/ECE international regulations. JARI will be ready to provide new testing services tailored to the scheduled IWVTA (International Whole Vehicle Type Approval).。
